Snowdonia for Gareth
Gareth loves volunteering each year at Snowdon, here's why.
“Each year I look forward to supporting Snowdon as a volunteer. I know the whole team well by now – from the staff at the Victoria Hotel that serve us much needed tea to the Mountain Leaders we recruit to ensure safety for the participants.
Even when weather gets in the way it is fun. I think 2010 was the worst – gales and torrential rain on Saturday and Sunday. Those of us out all day with radios and high-vis jackets were thankfully very busy, because it took our mind off the fact we were really, really wet!
What I always enjoy at the event is meeting the range of participants who take part: from experienced mountain walkers, to beginners who otherwise would only walk to where they parked the car; and from children as young as six to great grandparents.
Most people have some personal connection with prostate cancer – a brother, or a son, or an uncle, or a father. Each year I meet someone new who tells me about their story; and I tell them about mine. There’s always this sense of community, even if only for a day or two. That’s one reason I keep coming back, waterproofs at the ready…”
